Which drinks are allowed in the Tayyibat system? Coffee, tea, milk, water, soda
Black coffee and green tea (no sugar) are kept, even within the 2 hours after a meal; milk and soda are set aside. Here is where juices, water, black tea, herbal teas, and karkadé stand.
Short answer
The list is short when it comes to drinks. Black coffee (no sugar, no milk) and green tea (no sugar) are kept, and both are allowed about twenty minutes after the meal, even during the 2-hour digestion window that follows it. Milk is set aside. Soda (fizzy drinks) is set aside. On juices, the list names only two, and both are kept: pomegranate juice, strained and without seeds, and mango juice. Water, black tea, herbal teas, and karkadé (hibiscus) have no line in the list of foods: further down, we say how the system frames water and what the list leaves unsaid about the others. The system sorts its 122 foods onto one side or the other, kept or set aside. The table below gives every drink the list names, with its status and its condition, then the four it does not name.
The table of drinks
One line per drink, with its status and the condition when there is one.
| Drink | Status | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Black coffee | kept | no sugar, no milk, allowed about twenty minutes after the meal, even during the 2-hour digestion window |
| Green tea | kept | no sugar, allowed about twenty minutes after the meal, even during the 2-hour digestion window |
| Pomegranate juice | kept | strained, no seeds |
| Mango juice | kept | juice only |
| Milk | set aside | |
| Soda (fizzy drink) | set aside | |
| Water | not named | not in the list of foods, see below |
| Black tea | not named | the list does not mention it |
| Herbal teas | not named | the list does not mention them |
| Karkadé (hibiscus) | not named | the list does not mention it |
Six drinks have a status in the list. For the last four rows, the list says nothing, and this article does not rule on them.
Black coffee and green tea: allowed, even within the 2 hours
In the drinks category of the list, two are kept, and they share the same kind of condition: black coffee without sugar and without milk, and green tea without sugar. Both are allowed about twenty minutes after the meal, including during the 2-hour digestion window, a window in which the rest of the system asks you to wait between eating and drinking (why wait 2 hours). The benchmark for quantity is at most two cups of black coffee and four cups of green tea. Arabic coffee with green cardamom, served black, is the everyday social drink. Green cardamom is among the spices that are kept.
Milk, soda, and juices: what is set aside, what is kept
Milk is set aside, so coffee is drunk black, and tea without milk: a latte, a cappuccino, coffee with milk, or tea with milk are not part of the system. Soda is set aside, with no exception, diet versions included. Juices. The list names two, both kept: pomegranate juice (strained, no seeds) and mango juice (juice only). They are taken with a meal rather than between meals (dried fruit and juices). What about orange or apple juice? The list does not name them, so this article does not rule on them.
Water, black tea, herbal teas, karkadé: what the list says
Water has no line in the list of 122 foods, but the system frames it clearly. You drink when you are thirsty, with no forced daily quota. A glass of water 15 to 30 minutes before the meal. During the meal, as little as possible: a small sip is fine, but never cold water. Between meals, water is allowed, including during the 2-hour window, like green tea and coffee without sugar. Tea or coffee after the meal comes about twenty minutes later. Black tea, herbal teas, and karkadé (hibiscus): the list does not mention them. We do not rule on them, and we do not guess from what they are made of. If you want to go further, you can receive the free excerpt of the guide: you leave your email address to get it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add milk to my coffee? No. Milk is set aside, so coffee with milk is too. The version that is kept is black coffee (no sugar, no milk). Can I drink coffee or green tea right after a meal? Not right away: wait about twenty minutes after the end of the meal. After that, black coffee (no sugar, no milk) and green tea (no sugar) are allowed, including during the rest of the 2-hour window. Is a diet soda or an orange juice allowed? Soda is set aside, with no exception for diet versions. Orange juice is not named in the list, which keeps only pomegranate juice (strained, no seeds) and mango juice (juice only).
