Are dried fruit and juices allowed in the Tayyibat system? What is kept and what is set aside
Dates, figs, raisins and prunes are kept; dried apricot is set aside. For juices, the list names only pomegranate without seeds and mango.
Short answer
Yes for the main dried fruits, with one exception, and yes for two juices only. In the official list of the Tayyibat system, dates, figs (2nd rank of the fruits), raisins and prunes are kept, while dried apricot is set aside. For juices, the list keeps strained pomegranate juice without seeds, and mango juice. Fizzy drinks are set aside; black coffee and green tea without sugar are kept. Do not mix up dried fruit and nuts: almonds, pine nuts and sunflower seeds sit in another category of the list, and they are set aside. Fresh fruit has its own article, fruit kept and fruit set aside; this one deals with what is dried or drunk.
The table, one by one
Here is every dried fruit and every drink that the system's list names, with its status and the condition when there is one.
| Food | Status | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | kept | reference fruit, rank 1 |
| Figs | kept | 2nd rank of the fruits |
| Raisins | kept | small amount |
| Prunes | kept | small amount |
| Dried apricot | set aside | ranked khabith, see below |
| Almonds | set aside | |
| Pine nuts | set aside | |
| Sunflower seeds | set aside | |
| Pomegranate juice | kept | strained, no seeds |
| Mango juice | kept | juice only |
| Black coffee | kept | no sugar, no milk, allowed even during the 2 hour digestion window |
| Green tea | kept | no sugar, allowed even during the 2 hour digestion window |
| Fizzy drinks | set aside |
Mango and pomegranate appear in the list as juices rather than whole fruit: mango is taken as juice only, pomegranate as juice without seeds.
Dried fruit, one case at a time
Three fruits in the table are dry by nature, and all three are kept: dates, raisins and prunes. The date holds first place in the system's fruit ranking, ahead of the fig and then the grape; its page details its place. The list keeps the fig, in second place in the fruit ranking, without saying whether it must be fresh or dried. Raisins and prunes follow the same logic of a concentrated fruit: a small amount rather than a big handful. Dried apricot is the only dried fruit set aside. The system ranks it khabith, the word Dr Al-Awadi uses for what stays off the list. It shares that fate with watermelon, melon and avocado on the fresh fruit side. Dried fruit or nuts? The confusion is common. Almonds, pine nuts and sunflower seeds are set aside: the list files them in a different category from fruit. A date being kept therefore says nothing about almonds.
Juices: two only
The list names two juices: pomegranate juice, strained and without seeds, and mango juice. In the site's sources they are taken with the meal rather than between meals. Fizzy drinks are set aside. What about other juices, orange or apple for example? The system's list does not name them, and we do not decide in its place. The simplest is to stay with what is written there: pomegranate without seeds, and mango. Among drinks without fruit, black coffee and green tea without sugar are kept, even during the 2 hour digestion window that follows a meal. The site's sources set the guide at up to two cups of black coffee and four cups of plain green tea.
In daily life
The date is the simplest gesture: at the table, not as a snack between meals, since the site's sources list fruit between meals among the habits to avoid. During Ramadan, the fast opens with three dates and water. For a cooked version, the honey and date cream brings honey and dates together. For prunes, the lamb tagine with prunes is the festive reference: the prunes are soaked for fifteen minutes, then added with a touch of honey to glaze during the last fifteen minutes of cooking. All the statuses are collected in the full list of foods. To see the overall logic, you can receive the free extract of the guide: you just leave your email address to get it.
Frequently asked questions
Are almonds allowed? No, almonds are set aside, like pine nuts and sunflower seeds. Is orange juice allowed? The system's list names only pomegranate juice without seeds and mango juice. Orange juice does not appear there, so we do not decide in its place. Are dried figs allowed? The list keeps the fig, in second place among the fruits, but it does not say whether it must be fresh or dried.
