The Egyptian Doctor's Diet: Who Is It, Exactly?
Someone mentioned an Egyptian doctor, a way of eating, and you left without the name. It happens constantly, and there is a reason for it.
The name you are looking for
It is Doctor Diaa Al-Awadi, an Egyptian physician, and the way of eating he taught is called the Tayyibat system. He never wrote it down. He explained it live, almost every day, in front of thousands of people, in spoken Egyptian Arabic. That is why it travels by word of mouth, and why you probably heard it from someone rather than read it somewhere. If you want to know who he was before you look at what he taught, his biography is here.
Why the name is spelled ten different ways
Tayyibat, tayyebat, taibat, taybat, tayibat, al tayebat. Al-Awadi, Alawady, El-Awady, Aouadi. None of them is wrong. The word is Arabic and it has no single official spelling in the Latin alphabet. Everyone writes what they heard. Since the system spread by ear and not in print, each person spells it their own way, and each spelling ends up in a different corner of the search results. This is worth knowing for a practical reason. If you look for a recipe or a food list and find almost nothing, try another spelling. You are probably not searching for the wrong thing, only writing it differently from whoever published it.
What the system says, in three rules
The whole thing holds in very little, and that is what makes it travel. First, foods are sorted into two camps. Those that are kept, tayyib, and those that are set aside, khabith. The dividing line is not the calorie, it is what the food does to digestion. Second, the meal is simple. One protein at a time, cooked vegetables, a measured portion of grain. Two proteins in the same meal are avoided. Third, the rhythm counts as much as the plate. Three meals, nothing in between, and roughly two hours between eating and drinking. That last habit is the one people find strangest, and it is explained on its own in the article on the two-hour rule. Everything else follows from those three.
Where to start, and what to be careful about
Two pages are enough to begin. The classified food list tells you what is kept and what is set aside, with the reason for each. The seven-day guide tells you what to do from the first morning. One warning about what circulates. Because nothing was ever written by him, several versions of the system are in the air, and they contradict each other on simple points. If you read that a food is allowed here and forbidden there, you are not confused: two different people are reporting the same broadcasts from memory. And the boundary matters. This way of eating is not a treatment, it diagnoses nothing, and it is no reason to stop anything a doctor prescribed you. We set that out plainly in is Tayyibat dangerous.
