The Benefits of Honey
Mentioned in the Quran as a source of healing, honey remains one of the most cherished foods. Here is what tradition says, what science confirms, and how to enjoy it safely.
In short
Honey is a simple and precious food. It soothes a sore throat, helps the skin heal and provides antioxidants. Eat it raw, one spoon is enough. But take care: never before age 1 for a baby, and in moderation if you watch your blood sugar.
In tradition
Honey holds a special place. The Quran devotes verses to it in surah An-Nahl (the bees), where it is described as a drink of varied colors carrying healing for people. (Surah An-Nahl, 69) For centuries, in the Maghreb as in the Gulf, families keep a jar of honey at home for a scratchy throat, tiredness, or a little sweetness in the morning. It is a gesture passed down through generations.
What science says
Modern research partly meets this tradition. Honey has a recognized antibacterial effect: some medical-grade honeys are used in hospitals on burns and wounds to support healing. It is also rich in antioxidants, the compounds that help protect cells. And for cough or a sore throat, several studies show that a spoon of honey truly soothes, sometimes as much as certain syrups, especially in the evening. Let us stay honest: honey is not a medicine and does not cure a serious illness. It is a good everyday ally, nothing more, nothing less.
How to use it
The simplest is often the best. A teaspoon or tablespoon of raw honey, taken as is or diluted in warm water (never boiling, heat damages its qualities). A few practical ideas: a spoon in the evening to calm a scratchy throat, a drizzle over dates or plain yogurt, or stirred into a herbal tea once it has cooled to warm. Prefer a raw, unheated and lightly processed honey, that is where the best is kept.
Precautions and for whom
One absolute rule: never honey before the age of 1. It may contain spores that cause infant botulism, dangerous for very young children whose digestive system is not ready. After age 1, that risk is gone. Honey is still a sugar. If you are diabetic or watching your blood sugar, go easy and talk to your doctor. For a serious wound or burn, do not self-treat: that is a matter for a healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions
Does honey make you gain less weight than sugar? It is still a sugar, with a more intense taste, so we sometimes use less. But it must be counted in your sugar intake. Can honey be heated? Better to avoid high heat, which breaks down its fragile compounds. Add it to a warm drink rather than a boiling one. Does honey expire? Well stored, dry and sealed, it keeps for a very long time. If it crystallizes, that is normal, a warm water bath makes it liquid again. This is informational and does not replace a doctor.
