The Benefits of Pomegranate

A fruit named among those of Paradise, packed with antioxidants and loved in season. Here is what we really know about pomegranate, without false promises.

In short

Pomegranate is one of those fruits we wait for every autumn. Its red, slightly tart seeds are full of polyphenols, antioxidants studied for heart health. The Quran names it among the fruits of Paradise. Worth knowing: it is sweet, so go easy, especially with juice.

In tradition

Pomegranate holds a special place. It is named in the Quran among God's blessings and the fruits of Paradise. We read: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ فِيهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَنَخْلٌ وَرُمَّانٌ « In both of them are fruits, palm trees and pomegranates » (Surah Ar-Rahman, verse 68). From one generation to the next, in the Maghreb as in the Gulf, pomegranate has graced autumn tables, fresh or as juice, a fruit to share and to offer.

What science says

Pomegranate is among the fruits richest in polyphenols, compounds with strong antioxidant power. Several studies have looked at its effect on heart health, with promising signals around blood pressure and markers of inflammation. Let us be honest: the research is still ongoing, results vary, and many trials are small. Pomegranate alone heals nothing, but it has its place in a varied, balanced diet.

How to eat it

The simplest way is to eat the seeds plain. Half a pomegranate a day in season already brings a nice amount. The seeds brighten up a salad, a yogurt, a meat or rice dish. For fresh juice, stick to a small glass (around 150 ml), since the sugar concentrates quickly. Tip: open the pomegranate in a bowl of water to loosen the seeds without splashing everywhere.

Precautions and for whom

Pomegranate is still sweet: people with diabetes or watching their blood sugar are better off choosing the seeds over juice, and in measured amounts. Important point: pomegranate juice can interact with some medicines, especially blood thinners or those for high blood pressure. If you are on treatment, ask your doctor or pharmacist before drinking it daily.

Frequently asked questions

Is the juice as good as the seeds? The seeds keep the fiber and fill you up more; the juice gives the antioxidants but concentrates the sugar. Favor the seeds day to day. When is it in season? Mainly autumn and early winter, when it is best and cheapest. Can children have it? Yes, as seeds and in small amounts, watching that they do not choke. This is informative and does not replace a doctor.
